The Evolution of Furniture Design in the Bohemian Lands and Other Countries of Europe

This permanent exhibition is the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic, showcasing the evolution of modern furniture design from the Biedermeier period in the mid-19th century through to the end of the 20th century. It highlights key developments in the Czech lands alongside international trends, featuring unique designer pieces.

The Evolution of Furniture Design in the Bohemian Lands and Other Countries of Europe is a comprehensive permanent display that charts the trajectory of modern furniture design. Spanning from the Biedermeier era in the early 19th century up to the close of the 20th century, this exhibition offers a broad perspective on the historical development of furniture making within the Czech lands, placing it in context with significant global advancements in the field. Visitors can expect to see a wide array of designer pieces, including one-of-a-kind creations that represent the pinnacle of craftsmanship and innovation across different periods. The exhibition features works by distinguished artist-designers such as Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Ray and Charles Eames, Josef Gočár, Josef Hoffmann, Pavel Janák, Eva Jiřičná, Kaare Klint, Verner Panton, Josip Plečnik, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Ettore Sottsass, and Bořek Šípek, among many others. It serves as an extensive overview of the most important stylistic movements and design philosophies that shaped furniture creation over more than a century.
