Exhibition summary

The exhibition "Art Amidst The Catastrophe" is a collaboration between the Museum Montanelli and the Centre for Persecuted Art, highlighting the works of artists who faced political and cultural persecution. It aims to foster empathy and call for tolerance by showcasing art that addresses difficult societal situations.

Curatorial context

The exhibition "Art Amidst The Catastrophe" (Kunst in der Katastrophe) represents a significant long-term collaboration between the Museum Montanelli and the Centre for Persecuted Art of Solingen. It brings together a range of authors whose works focus on the plight of politically and culturally persecuted artists, appealing to empathy and championing basic democratic values and tolerance towards differing ideas. Key featured artists include Felix Nussbaum, whose 1928 painting "The Desolate Street" metaphorically foretold the fate of Europe and who was tragically murdered in Auschwitz. The poet Mascha Kaléko reminisces about her lost home and wartime experiences in "Verses for my Contemporaries," powerfully evoking themes of loss and resilience. Czech multimedia artist Daniel Pešta contributes his "Hell" cycle, including videos "The Cry" and "Narcissus" (2012), which serve as stark mirrors to the viewer, emphasizing the importance of not remaining silent in the face of catastrophe. The Centre for Persecuted Art, in partnership with the Museum Montanelli since 2009, organizes exhibitions from its collection, focusing on artists impacted by totalitarian regimes and promoting documentation and research into their lives and works.
