Exhibition summary
This exhibition showcases the unique and obsessive quasi-automatic drawings of Karel Havlíček, a trained lawyer whose work serves as a metaphor for political terror and personal struggles. The exhibition critically examines his classification as art brut.
Curatorial context
This exhibition focuses on Karel Havlíček, a lawyer by training, whose prolific and obsessive daily drawings are distinctive metaphors for political terror and his difficult personal life. Unlike the spiritist draughtsmen whose works are also presented in parallel, Havlíček's creations share common ground with Art Nouveau, Symbolism, and Surrealism, drawing admiration from figures like Karel Teige. The exhibition at MuMo aims to critically assess Havlíček's classification as art brut, highlighting his oeuvre as a singular and unique feature in the history of Czech art.
The exhibition is presented in parallel with a collection of 'outsider art' from Pavel Konečný, which spans folk and naive art as well as art brut. Konečný's collection features raw carvings, naive rural paintings, portraits, architectural and machine drawings, alongside works by spiritist mediums. While the common denominator for Konečný's collection is the inviolability of the influence of 'haute-culture,' Havlíček's artistic output is presented as distinctively unique and subject to critical examination.
The conception of the exhibition is by Terezie Zemánková, Ph.D., and Doc. MgA. Ivana Brádková, with scenography by Doc. MgA. Ivana Brádková. A catalogue featuring original texts by Karel Teige and a biographical study by historian Petr Hlaváček will be published.
