Exhibition summary

This production of Coppélia is a mesmerising comic ballet in three acts, suitable for all ages. First presented on May 16, 2024, at the State Opera in Prague, it is a revival of Ronald Hynd’s renowned version.

Curatorial context

The mesmerising comic ballet in three acts, Coppélia, has captivated audiences worldwide for over 154 years. The current Czech National Ballet production, which premiered on May 16, 2024, at the State Opera in Prague, revives Ronald Hynd’s version, originally staged in London in 1985. Unlike many Romantic ballets where unrequited passion leads to tragedy, Coppélia concludes happily with a marriage, adhering to 19th-century conventions. The story centers on Doctor Coppélius, an inventor of mechanical toys, and his life-size doll, Coppélia. The beautiful doll draws the attention of local youths, including Franz, who neglects his fiancée Swanilda. Jealous and upset, Swanilda uncovers the truth: Coppélia is a doll that Coppélius intends to bring to life with a human spirit. Swanilda thwarts Coppélius's plan to steal Franz's soul, leading Franz to realize his mistake and reconcile with Swanilda. The ballet culminates in their wedding, celebrated during a harvest festival inspired by Galician traditions.
