Exhibition summary

This permanent exhibition recreates a historical salon interior from the first half of the 19th century within the Vávra House. It showcases unique wall oil paintings created in 1847 by the landscape painter Josef Navrátil, an artist also known for his work at Prague Castle.

Curatorial context

The Vávra House, a monument-protected building with a history tracing back to the 17th century and modifications through the 19th century, now houses the Postal Museum, part of the National Technical Museum. The first floor is dedicated to a reconstruction of a 19th-century interior, specifically the first half of the 1800s. This experience is significantly enhanced by the presence of wall oil paintings created in 1847 by Josef Navrátil. Navrátil was a notable landscape painter who also contributed to prestigious projects such as the decoration of Prague Castle and the royal summer residences at Ploskovice and Zákupy. The building itself retains its Baroque appearance from 1678, with later adjustments in 1805 and 1899, and stands as one of the few remaining traces of the original Petřín district development.
