Exhibition summary

This exhibition features Czech and international artists examining how computing technologies, automation, and digital infrastructures impact personal sovereignty and political freedom. It explores the struggle for self-determination in an age of pervasive data and algorithmic influence.

Curatorial context

DATAS: The Data and the Sovereign confronts the profound impact of algorithmic systems, data infrastructures, and AI-driven governance on human agency and democracy. The exhibition features works ranging from interactive installations to software art, exploring the battle for sovereignty in an era where data and computation often exceed legal and political control. It is divided into three thematic constellations: 'Spectres of the Leviathan,' focusing on algocracy and automated governance; 'Islands of Insubordination,' examining infrastructures and their geopolitical and ecological implications; and 'Songs of Refusal,' which addresses personal sovereignty under conditions of surveillance and prediction. The exhibition brings together artists, philosophers, and technologists to examine how personal and national self-determination can persist amidst surveillance capitalism and authoritarianism. The featured works not only critique these forces but also propose ethical alternatives to extractive digital regimes. Developed within the DATAS programme, this group exhibition aims to foster dialogue on the future of democracy and individual freedom in an increasingly data-driven world.
