Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Christ’s Way to Golgotha through the Streets of Jerusalem' at the Strahov Monastery offers a profound look into Baroque art, piety, and the tradition of pilgrimage. Central to the display is a remarkable large-format print, 'View of Jerusalem with the Passion of Christ,' created around 1735 by Johann Daniel Herz the Elder. This exceptional Baroque print, one of the largest ever made from a single plate, depicts Jerusalem from an aerial perspective teeming with biblical scenes and figures, capturing multiple moments of Christ's Easter story simultaneously. The exhibition aims to recall the almost forgotten practice of 'virtual' or mental pilgrimages, a technique developed to help pilgrims mentally construct images of Jerusalem and recall biblical narratives, particularly Christ's Passion. Alongside Herz’s print, visitors will encounter other artifacts connected with journeys to the Holy Land, including devotional texts, pilgrimage itineraries, maps, paintings, graphic vedute, and souvenirs. The exhibition, which has been revised and supplemented with works from the Strahov Library collections, highlights historical links between the Strahov Monastery and Olomouc, particularly through Bishop Jindřich Zdík, a founder and a pilgrim to Jerusalem, and the monastery's symbolic topographical connection to biblical Jerusalem as 'Mount Zion'.
