Roman Signer Exhibition at Skaftfell: What to Expect from the Retrospective
Art enthusiasts visiting contemporary exhibitions will have the opportunity to experience a dedicated retrospective featuring Swiss action artist Roman Signer. Curated by Gavin Morrison, the exhibition opens on July 4, 2026, and runs through September 27, 2026.
Exploring Roman Signer’s Connection to Iceland
Born in 1938, Signer is internationally recognized for his staged actions, films, photographs, and installations that manipulate everyday objects—such as tables, chairs, boots, kayaks, and umbrellas—through unexpected forces and physical transformations. Since the early 1990s, the artist has frequently traveled and worked in Iceland, making the local landscape a central presence in his visual practice rather than a mere backdrop.
This upcoming exhibition focuses specifically on works produced during his journeys across the country, many of which historically began in Seyðisfjörður. Visitors can view a collection of early Super-8 films, sculptures, installations, and photographs that highlight his longstanding artistic dialogue with the region. Alongside the visual works, a new edition of the publication when you travel in Iceland you see a lot of water—documenting a dialogue between Signer and Icelandic artist Tumi Magnússon during their travels—will also be released.

The exhibition is hosted at Skaftfell Center for Visual Art located at Austurvegur 42 in Seyðisfjörður. The opening reception takes place on July 4 from 16:00 to 18:00. Following the opening, regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 to 17:00.
