Siggubær Historic House Exhibition: Domestic Life in Early Hafnarfjörður

Siggubær is a preserved historic house that offers a window into the daily life of a working-class family in early 20th-century Hafnarfjörður. Visitors can experience the interior of a traditional corrugated-iron-clad timber home as it appeared during this period.

Siggubær serves as an authentic example of a worker's and sailor's home in Hafnarfjörður from the early 20th century. The house, built in 1902 by sailor Erlendur Marteinsson, offers visitors a genuine look at how ordinary families lived at the time and features the characteristic architecture of the period's corrugated-iron-clad timber buildings. The house was home to Erlendur's daughter, Sigríður Erlendsdóttir, who lived there from childhood until 1978. Upon her passing in 1979, she bequeathed the property to the museum, ensuring that her family home would be preserved as a cultural heritage site. Today, it stands as an intimate museum space that highlights both the domestic history of the town and the life stories of those who inhabited these spaces for generations.
