Reflecting on SZENE Salzburg and the Conclusion of Sommerszene 2026
The annual Sommerszene festival has officially concluded its latest run, wrapping up a vibrant season of contemporary performance art in the city. The festival drew strong audience numbers, welcoming over 14,000 visitors between June 8 and June 23. This year’s edition featured a diverse lineup of 14 productions, which included five Austrian premieres and two world premieres, cementing the event's role as a key fixture for dance and performance art.

The festival reached its finale with "Come Back Again," a notable collaboration between Susanne Kirnbauer, former first soloist of the Vienna State Opera, and internationally recognized choreographer Doris Uhlich. Staged at SZENE Salzburg, the production offered audiences a moving conclusion, followed by an artist talk that brought together the creators and the public.
Festival leadership, including Peter Hofer and Seppi Sigl from the board, noted the strong public reception under the direction of intendant Angela Glechner, highlighting the unifying energy that contemporary arts bring to the local cultural landscape.
