Curatorial context

Murmur of Souls (Murmure des âmes) transforms the Espace Apollonia into a landscape where absence is transmuted into presence. Artist Joseph Bey explores themes of erased silhouettes and half-forgotten figures through dark, textural paintings and video installations, framing these images as ghosts that refuse to be silenced. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a suspended 'forest' of clothing donated by the public, representing a silent, collective community that occupies the gallery space. Accompanying this installation is a series of boat sculptures, including a charred vessel surrounded by smaller black boats, which serve as poignant symbols of departure, migration, and the persistent hope found in loss. The exhibition draws inspiration from the artist's personal pilgrimage on the island of Shikoku in Japan, infusing the work with a sense of silence and spiritual quest. Together, these elements invite visitors to walk among the shadows and find fragments of a shared human experience within the artist's deeply meditative environment.

Visitors are invited to participate by donating or lending clothing items for the immersive installation; these will be returned or donated to local charities after the exhibition concludes.
