Curatorial context

The Fondation de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame is an institution unique in France, having been dedicated for eight centuries to the construction and maintenance of the Strasbourg Cathedral. Despite historical political and religious shifts, the institution has remained a constant force in the preservation of the cathedral, a testament to its enduring importance. This exhibition traces the institution's history from its founding in the early 13th century, when it was established by the Bishop of Strasbourg and the cathedral chapter, to its transition under municipal control in the 1280s. The exhibition is organized into fifteen sections housed within the Musée de l’Œuvre Notre-Dame, which has occupied the foundation's historic building since 1931. Visitors can discover the diversity of the foundation’s missions and the wealth of its collections, which include rare architectural plans, engravings, photographs, medieval sculptures, and ancient tools. These materials offer an intimate look at one of the oldest cathedral workshops in Europe, highlighting the techniques and savoir-faire that were inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. The exhibition highlights the ongoing legacy of these crafts in keeping the cathedral alive today.
