Exhibition summary

Twana's Box presents the photographic archive of Twana Abdullah, a Kurdish-Iraqi photographer active between 1974 and 1992, as discovered and curated by his son, Rawsht Twana. The exhibition explores themes of displacement, cultural identity, and the power of memory through family records and daily life in Kurdistan.

Curatorial context

Twana's Box tells the story of Rawsht Twana's discovery of a cardboard box filled with his late father's old negatives, hidden in the sands of Iraqi Kurdistan. His father, Twana Abdullah, was a Kurdish-Iraqi photographer who documented the daily life of a region deeply affected by conflict before his execution in 1992. For decades, this visual testimony remained unseen, serving now as a vital link between a son and the father he never truly knew, as well as a foundational element of Rawsht's own photographic journey. The exhibition highlights the resilience of the Kurdish people and the significance of preserving their culture amidst ongoing displacement. By meticulously restoring these delicate negatives, Rawsht Twana transforms a once-silenced personal history into a public narrative that transcends borders. The work offers viewers a glimpse into a side of Kurdistan rarely seen in traditional historical accounts, focusing on culture, domesticity, and the enduring nature of identity across generations.
