Curatorial context
The Domenig-Haus, designed by the significant Austrian architect Günther Domenig between 1975 and 1979, is a landmark of radical architecture. Initially commissioned as a bank building, it was intended to embody the institution's progressive spirit through innovative design. Domenig envisioned an 'organ-like body' with biomorphic structures, famously describing the building's folded facade as the 'House with the bend.' The exterior, with its attention-grabbing steel-plate aesthetic, has been likened to a 'crashed spaceship' or a 'caterpillar,' earning it nicknames like 'Tin Gaudí.'
Inside, biomorphic forms continue to dominate, eschewing right angles for fluid, organic shapes. The prominent ventilation ducts snake through the interior like veins, and along with the facade, they were placed under heritage protection in 2005. After serving as a publishing house and gallery, the Domenig-Haus has been repurposed for culinary use since 2022, with the restaurant Kent occupying its four levels. Experiencing its interior offers a journey back to the expressive design language of the 1970s and highlights Vienna's spirit of urban renewal and forward-looking architecture.
