Exhibition summary

This exhibition presents a focused retrospective of the Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba within the Belvedere 21's sculpture garden. It features large-format bronze figures from the Fritz Wotruba Private Foundation, complemented by his "Großes Figurenrelief" from the Brussels World Expo, highlighting his significant influence on post-war Austrian sculpture.

Curatorial context

The Belvedere 21's Skulpturengarten is spatially structured by five concrete pedestals designed by Heimo Zobernig in 2013. Upon these pedestals, large-format bronze figures from the collection of the Fritz Wotruba Private Foundation form a concentrated retrospective of the Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba. The selection is further enhanced by Wotruba's "Großes Figurenrelief" for the Austrian Pavilion at the Brussels World Exhibition, on permanent loan from mumok. As an internationally successful artist and teacher, Wotruba significantly influenced Austrian sculpture in the post-war decades, connecting it to international contemporary art. The figures, increasingly abstracted with cubic and cylindrical forms, illustrate the sculptor's endeavor to formally link figure and architecture.
