Curatorial context

Located in the former Palace Stables of the Lower Belvedere, the Gallery Middle Ages and Renaissance presents a significant collection of art from the mid-fourteenth to the first half of the sixteenth century. Since 2007, this space has showcased medieval treasures, with a recent refurbishment enhancing the presentation. A centerpiece of the collection is the "Salzburg Altar" by Rueland Frueauf the Elder, comprising eight panels that once formed a monumental winged altar. The gallery also features other notable works including panel paintings by Michael Pacher, Thomas von Villach, and Urban Görtschacher, alongside carved figures by Hans Klocker and sandstone sculptures by the Master of Grosslobming. The refurbishment of the Gallery Middle Ages and Renaissance aims to provide visitors with a deeper appreciation for the artistic achievements of this period. The setting within the historic Palace Stables, a building with its own equestrian heritage from Prince Eugene of Savoy's time, adds a unique layer of context to the display of these medieval and Renaissance masterpieces. The collection offers a rich insight into the artistic styles, religious themes, and craftsmanship prevalent during these centuries.
