Curatorial context

In autumn 2016, the Belvedere presented 'Heavenly! The Baroque Sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel' at Prince Eugene of Savoy’s Winterpalais, shedding light on an artist whose life remains largely obscure. Despite limited knowledge about his origins and training, Pinsel was a highly influential sculptor active in the region of Lemberg (Lviv) during the second half of the eighteenth century. Working primarily in wood and stone, often in collaboration with architect Bernard Meretyn, his works adorned churches and left a significant stylistic mark on the region's Baroque sculpture. The exhibition featured around twenty exhibits from Pinsel and his studio, offering a rare opportunity to see his work in Austria. His figures are characterized by powerful expressivity, conveyed through dramatic facial expressions, gestures, and the opulent rendering of garments. The display was contextualized with works by Austrian Late Baroque painters from the Belvedere's collection, such as Franz Anton Maulbertsch and Paul Troger, creating a Baroque spectacle of expressive painting and carving. Many of Pinsel's works were lost or damaged under Soviet rule, making this presentation particularly valuable.
