Exhibition summary

This exhibition at Belvedere's 21er Haus explored the works of Roland Goeschl and Fritz Wotruba, two artists closely associated with the museum. It highlighted their distinct formal approaches while underscoring the innovative spirit that connected their art.

Curatorial context

The 21er Haus presented an exhibition dedicated to Roland Goeschl and Fritz Wotruba, artists with significant ties to the Belvedere. Roland Goeschl had a major solo exhibition in the "old" 20er Haus in 1969, and Fritz Wotruba's estate has been permanently accessible at the "Wotruba im 21er Haus" since 2011. Wotruba's work in the 1960s included stage designs and the concept for the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Vienna, where his sculptural approach was radically extended into architectural form. Goeschl, meanwhile, expanded his sculptures into architectural spatial structures for "Art in Architecture" projects and films for the Humanic company. Although Goeschl's color sculptures and Wotruba's classical sculptures appear formally distant, the innovative power of Goeschl's works is rooted in Wotruba's ideas about modern sculpture.
