Located in a lavishly renovated city-center palace, the Heidi Horten Collection houses one of Europe's most impressive private portfolios, amassed by Austrian billionaire and patron of the arts Heidi Goëss-Horten (1941-2022). The collection offers a representative cross-section of art history from classical Modernism to the present day, with a focus on proponents of Modernism, Neo-Expressionism, and Pop Art. Prominent artists featured include Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and Georg Baselitz, presenting a curated selection of international art history.
The museum features three main floors and four smaller display rooms, totaling almost 1,500 m² of exhibition space. The permanent 'Klimt ⮂ Warhol' exhibition, installed in fall 2024, showcases 55 highlights selected by the public, featuring works by artists like Klimt, Warhol, Picasso, Chagall, Munch, Schiele, Klee, Baselitz, Richter, Rothko, and Lichtenstein. The exhibition design is inspired by the founder's home, creating an intimate atmosphere. The museum also hosts temporary special exhibitions, frequently featuring contemporary artists, and offers special activities for children and young people.
