Curatorial context
The "Hot Questions – Cold Storage" exhibition at the Az W – Architekturzentrum Wien offers a comprehensive look at Austrian architecture across the 20th and 21st centuries, curated from a global viewpoint. This exhibition highlights the institution's significant collection, which includes project collections, architectural models, drawings, furniture, and films from approximately 100 architects. Presented in a playful and engaging manner, the exhibition is structured into seven thematic sections, each introduced by a pressing contemporary issue. It examines crucial aspects such as the social dimension of architecture, distributive justice, resource management, and sustainable approaches to counter climate change.
The exhibition also touches upon societal perceptions and the historical context of architectural movements. It questions the underrepresentation of women in architecture and explores how the appreciation of Viennese Modernism, including the works of architects like Otto Wagner and Adolf Loos, evolved over time, with their value only being widely recognized from the 1960s onwards. Furthermore, the collection addresses post-war modernism, building amidst scarcity, and socially relevant construction themes, bringing to life the subject of architecture with around 400 objects, including notable architectural Lego models by Harald Gach.
