Curatorial context
The Josephinum, established in 1785 as a military academy of medicine and surgery, is a significant center for medical history in Vienna. It houses one of the world's most outstanding collections of medical history, including approximately 1,200 renowned anatomical wax models originally commissioned by Emperor Joseph II. These precious exhibits are displayed in seven rooms within original rosewood and Venetian glass cases.
Beyond the wax models, the museum presents numerous other crucial objects of medical history, such as instruments, artwork, books, archives, and manuscripts. Notable items include the world's first endoscope (1806), Theodor Billroth's dissected stomach specimen, surgical instruments from Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla, Gall's skull, presumed skull fragments of Ludwig Van Beethoven, a curriculum vitae of Sigmund Freud, and the needle file used in the assassination of Empress Elisabeth. The Josephinum has been extensively renovated, revealing original frescoes in its historic auditorium and offering an adaptable exhibition space that also engages with current bioethical debates. Its extensive library, founded in 1786, remains an important resource.
