Curatorial context

The "Klimt lost" special exhibition, presented at the historic Klimt Villa where Gustav Klimt worked until his death, confronts the pervasive issue of looted and lost art. The exhibition moves beyond individual artworks to explore the narratives surrounding collectors, perpetrators, and victims, questioning how society grapples with loss in its multifaceted forms. It offers a fresh perspective on the lost works of Klimt and the significant protagonists of that era, inviting visitors to consider the broader implications of loss. The Klimt Villa itself, where the exhibition is housed, served as Gustav Klimt's studio and workshop from 1911 to 1918. The ground floor has been authentically reconstructed to reflect his living and working environment, aiming to immerse visitors in the atmosphere of his studio. Other rooms provide context on the models and clients who influenced Klimt's creative output during his final period. The villa's unique architecture, where an original studio was later 'overbuilt' with a villa in the 1920s, retains the interior essence of Klimt's original studio space.
