The Kunst Haus Wien, dedicated to Friedensreich Hundertwasser, showcases his unique life's work through an extensive permanent exhibition of his paintings, prints, and objects. The museum itself is a prime example of Hundertwasser's architectural and ecological philosophy, featuring irregular design and abundant greenery.
The Kunst Haus Wien is a monument to the visionary artist, architect, and ecologist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000). The building, formerly a furniture factory, was completely rebuilt by Hundertwasser between 1989 and 1991 in his characteristic style, incorporating irregular features and a multitude of colors, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Opened as a museum in 1991, it was the first museum to be awarded the Austrian Eco-Label. The museum houses the only permanent Hundertwasser exhibition in the world, featuring around 170 of his works including paintings, prints, and tapestries, alongside objects that illustrate his ecological philosophy, such as models of his architectural designs. The upper floors are dedicated to temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. The museum underwent renovation in 2023/24 to improve energy efficiency, harnessing a hydrothermal energy source and incorporating plant species throughout the building, reflecting Hundertwasser's principles.
