Curatorial context
The Karlskirche, or Church of St. Charles, stands as a prominent symbol of Vienna and a masterpiece of European Baroque architecture. Conceived as the last great work by architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed in 1739, it was erected following Emperor Charles VI's vow during a plague, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeus. The church's exterior is characterized by its imposing green dome and two grand 47-meter columns, adorned with sculptural depictions of St. Charles Borromäus's life and works. Inside, visitors are greeted by a lavishly decorated interior with marble accents, red and gold details, and sumptuously decorated high altar, all designed by Fischer von Erlach. The dome's interior is adorned with expansive frescoes by Johannes Michael Rottmayr, covering 1,250 m².
Beyond its architectural splendor, the Karlskirche serves as a cultural hub. A 2.47-meter model of the church is displayed in the vestibule, detailing its interior and façade. Visitors can access an organ gallery leading to a terrace above the entrance, offering views of Karlsplatz and surrounding landmarks. The Museo Borromeo, or treasury, exhibits sacred artifacts, including the historical traveling clothes of St. Charles Borromeus. The church square frequently hosts events such as the Popfest, an Art Advent Market, and other public gatherings, with the summer fountain providing a popular meeting point. Regular church concerts, including performances of Mozart's Requiem and Vivaldi's Four Seasons, as well as gospel singing during Advent, highlight the venue's exceptional acoustics.
