Exhibition summary

Villa Beer, a masterpiece of Second Viennese Modernism designed by Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, has been extensively restored and opened to the public for the first time. It showcases innovative architectural design from the interwar period and offers a glimpse into Viennese architectural history.

Curatorial context

Constructed in 1929/1930 by Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach, Villa Beer is a seminal example of 'Second Viennese Modernism' and stands as a significant piece of Viennese architectural history, often compared to international modernist icons. The villa features an open, flowing room layout with large windows that enhance sightlines and indoor-outdoor connection, embodying Frank's philosophy of 'Modern is whatever gives us the greatest possible freedom.' Josef Frank, a leading figure in Viennese architecture and design, intended Villa Beer as his monument. After emigrating to Sweden in 1933, he became renowned for his work with Svenskt Tenn. The villa itself has a rich history, having been home to notable figures and used by the British Army post-war, before its recent extensive renovation which began in early 2024 and was completed with meticulous attention to detail to restore it to its original state while meeting modern standards. The Villa Beer Foundation acquired the villa in 2021 with the aim of opening it to the public, transforming it into an accessible space for experiencing history and design.

Admission and ticket notes

The villa is open to the public starting in early March 2026. Visitors can explore the building independently with time slot tickets or join guided tours offered in multiple languages. Advance booking via the official website is required for all visit options.
