Exhibition summary

This exhibition features a series of art interventions within the preserved Tröpferlbad (public bathhouse) space at the Wieden District Museum. Four distinct artistic works explore themes of hygiene, cleansing, history, and the body in relation to the historical venue, offering new perspectives on the space and its past.

Curatorial context

During the development of a new permanent exhibition, the originally preserved shower room of the Tröpferlbad in the Wieden District Museum became a stage for contemporary art interventions in Spring 2021. Four distinct works engaged with the building, which served as a municipal public bath from 1893 to 1978, proposing new perspectives on the Tröpferlbad and the museum itself. Laura Stoll's "Purification" used a site-specific installation to explore notions of the self, originality, and the transformative power of water. Leo Mayr and Martin Weichselbaumer's "weiße Flagge" offered a critical view of the Tröpferlbad as an urban health facility within a broader social context. Marlene Hübner and Amelie Schlemmer's "Changing Cabinet" intimately examined the routine actions of dressing and undressing, highlighting the public bath as a space of diverse poles like clothing and body, intimacy and public display. Christopher Frieß, Marlene Fröhlich, Leonhard Pill, and Noa Schaub's "WIEDEN LEAKS" addressed the themes of the bathhouse, authenticity, and the museum by provoking historical possibilities through objects that first came to public attention during the Tröpferlbad's history. Each artistic position was combined with an object from the history of Vienna's public baths, creating connections between the present and past, art and science, and various expressions of history.
