Curatorial context

The Sondermuseum Ziegel und Baukeramik (Special Museum for Bricks and Building Ceramics) presents a remarkable collection that delves into the history of wall and roof tiles. With over 13,000 artifacts, the museum covers the evolution of this building material from its earliest forms in Babylon to contemporary examples. Complementing the extensive collection of bricks are objects related to their production, such as antique brick molds. A significant focus of the museum's work is the documentation of all brickworks, both past and present, in Austria, along with research into various brick markings. The museum's origins are tied to Director Anton Schirmböck, a pioneer in brick research in Austria. His extensive work culminated in a comprehensive exhibition in 1973, leading to the establishment of the Wiener Ziegelmuseum in 1973, now known as the Wiener Ziegel- und Baukeramikmuseum. After a period as an external branch and subsequent relocations due to space constraints, it became an independent museum in 1986. The collection is recognized as one of the most extensive of its kind and actively collaborates with the Vienna City Archaeology department, serving as a resource for international researchers.
