Curatorial context

The Hernals District Museum, in its 'Aktuelles' section, highlights a newly published biography on Friedrich Julius Bieber, an explorer who resided in Vienna's Hietzing district. Authored by Josef Holzapfel, the biography delves into Bieber's life and his significant work documenting the Kaffa region of Ethiopia. Bieber was known to the Kaffitscho people as 'Abba Kitaba' (Father of the Book) for his efforts to record their traditions and history, particularly during his travels in 1905. His seminal work, 'Kaffa. Ein altkuschitisches Volkstum in Inner-Afrika', was published in two volumes in 1920 and 1923. While a substantial part of Bieber's ethnographic collection is housed at the Volkskundemuseum, a remainder was acquired by the Bezirksmuseum Hietzing starting in 1979 and forms part of its permanent exhibition. This new publication, created with contributions from museum staff and Klaus Bieber (the explorer's grandson), features previously unpublished photographs and offers insights into the life and legacy of this notable figure.
