Josefstadt's Enduring Jewish Heritage: Exploring Religious Life in Vienna Through This Exhibition

This exhibition, updated in 2018, explores the religious life and history of the Jewish community in Vienna's Josefstadt district. It traces their story from the community's origins to the destruction of their synagogue and memorializes those persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime.

The exhibition 'Räume des Glaubens. Das religiöse Leben in der Josefstadt Jüdische Josefstadt' is an extension of the permanent exhibition at the Bezirksmuseum Josefstadt, updated in 2018. It delves into the history of the Jewish community in Josefstadt, starting from their early settlement in the area and continuing through to the tragic events of the destruction of the synagogue in Neudeggergasse. A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to remembrance, featuring a memorial plaque that lists the names of Jewish residents of Josefstadt who were largely expelled or murdered between 1938 and 1945 under the Nazi regime. In conjunction with the exhibition, a publication under the same title, 'Räume des Glaubens. Das religiöse Leben in der Josefstadt,' has also been released. The exhibition serves as a crucial historical document, shedding light on the community's presence, faith, and ultimate persecution within the district.
