Exhibition summary

This exhibition delves into the world of embroidered sayings and notions of female virtue around 1900. It examines how these embroidered pieces, often reducing women to roles of mother, wife, and housekeeper, presented a romanticized image that masked the difficult realities of women's lives at the time. The exhibition deconstructs this idealized portrayal.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Frauen(t)räume – Von gestickten Sprüchen und weiblicher Tugend um 1900' (Women's (Dreams) – Of Embroidered Sayings and Female Virtue around 1900) confronts the idealized representation found in embroidered samplers. These pieces, common in households and museum displays, often conveyed moral messages that confined women to domestic roles such as mother, dutiful wife, and frugal homemaker, while ignoring their actual life challenges. This exhibition critically examines these romanticized depictions and deconstructs them. The project is a result of the 'Uni im Bezirksmuseum' initiative, stemming from the seminar 'Telling Urban History Through Objects: The Musealization of the Urban' held in the summer semester of 2022 at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna. This seminar was conducted in cooperation with the Vienna Museum's Bezirksmuseen Staff Unit.
