Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Uni im Bezirksmuseum: Freizeit in der Brigittenau im 20. Jahrhundert' delves into the development of everyday life and leisure activities in Vienna's working-class district of Brigittenau throughout the last century. It questions how citizens spent their free time, from childhood play with toys like toy cars and doll kitchens to summer vacations, and the emergence of the concept of 'leisure' itself. The exhibition showcases personal memories and objects that illustrate the changing patterns of life outside of school, household duties, and work. This project was a result of a collaborative seminar between the Institute of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna and the District Museums' Coordination Office of the Wien Museum. Students critically examined and redesigned exhibition areas, focusing on themes of urban history told through objects. The outcomes, presented in September and October 2022, enriched the district museums with new perspectives and storytelling formats, contributing to a richer understanding of local history.
