The Austrian Museum of Horticulture, located in the former Orangerie Kagran, holds the most significant collection documenting the history of Austrian horticulture and allotment gardening. With over 40,000 exhibits, the museum presents a diverse range of items including photographs, plans, tools, garden furniture, and vehicles, with a selection displayed across approximately 500 square meters.
The exhibition areas focus on various aspects of horticulture, such as vegetable cultivation, ornamental plant cultivation, nursery gardening, and garden and green space design. Highlights include numerous exhibits from the former Rothschild gardens and a special focus on the Floristic Collection of Christian Sädtler, acquired in 2001. This significant collection comprises vessels, artificial flowers, and decorative items, notably over 470 wall vases from 1900-1970, and 540 iron stamps from the late 19th century used for making artificial flowers. The collection is further enriched by the historical interior of a florist's shop from the Historismus era, preserved and displayed through the efforts of Klaus Ruhnau, the last owner of the shop.
