Curatorial context

The Josephinum is dedicating its first special exhibition to the portrait photographer Max Schneider (1887–1958). Beginning in 1923, Schneider created technically adept and artistically high-quality portraits of leading personalities for the Vienna Medical Faculty. His intimate approach captured the characteristic traits of Viennese medicine's prominent figures, resulting in a vibrant kaleidoscope of diverse personalities before this period was brutally interrupted in 1938. Schneider's photo studio was "Aryanized," forcing him and his family to flee. He eventually settled in the United States, where he died in 1958. The collections of the Medical University of Vienna, housed at the Josephinum, hold approximately 400 of Schneider's photographs. This exhibition, on the centenary of his work for the Medical Faculty, marks the first public display of the life and work of the "Master of Physician Portraits."
