This exhibition delves into historical maps and charts, exploring how people in the Middle Ages and early modern periods imagined the world. It questions our trust in maps and the stories they tell, examining different worldviews through historical sources from the abbey's collections.
The exhibition "Charts on the Table!" at Klosterneuburg Monastery investigates the fascination with destinations and desirable places throughout history, posing questions about what we seek when the world seems fully explored and how people in the past and present imagined the globe. Through five thematic sections, visitors are taken on a journey through time, examining historical sources from the abbey’s archives, library, and art collections. These sources, including maps, scholarly works, travel diaries, and accounts of expeditions, offer unusual perspectives on the world from today's viewpoint. The exhibition highlights how people within the monastery walls shared excitement and formed a picture of the world, engaging with contemporary cultural and scientific developments. It follows traveling clerics, pilgrims, explorers, and researchers, shedding light on the diverse worldviews reflected in the monastery's collections.
