Kunsthalle Wien dedicates its space to two simultaneous solo exhibitions by Vienna-based artists Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* and Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński. These exhibitions are part of Kunsthalle Wien’s ongoing commitment to showcasing artists who challenge the enduring legacies of imperialism, colonialism, and slavery, and whose work politically reframes racism and heteronormativity as tools of subjugation. Both artists, through their distinct practices and lived experiences, investigate racist regimes of looking and practices of Othering, deploying potent aesthetic strategies of resistance. Ana Hoffner ex-Prvulovic*'s multimedia installations, which include film, photography, objects, and text, delve into the fabrication of history, memory, and subjectivity, highlighting the unconscious forces at play. Her work re-examines queerness as a survival strategy, non-alignment as an ethical stance, and family as a chosen kinship structure, staging moments of subversion and resistance to help uncover and appropriate hidden histories, thereby escaping societal assignations. Hoffner ex-Prvulovic* also reflects on the capacity of the art field to support minoritarian alternatives and non-aligned thought. Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński's practice, encompassing photographic series, films, and installations, creates spaces for dialogue and encounter between herself, the viewer, and the individuals who populate her art—those who have been erased, those present, and those yet to come. She critically dissects racist cultural apparatuses while reaching beyond the violence inherent in archives and institutions to open pathways for exchange, care, and imagination. Merging critical Black feminist theory, conceptual visual strategies, and speculative narration, Kazeem-Kamiński explores diverse methods to communicate across time and space, facilitating the processing of the past and the invention of the future.
