Exhibition summary
The Imperial Coach Collection at Schönbrunn Palace showcases the opulent carriages and exquisite attire of the Habsburgs. It features a dedicated 'Sisi Path' exploring the life of Empress Elisabeth and draws parallels with Lady Diana.
Curatorial context
Opened in September 1922 as one of the first new museum sites of the young Austrian Republic in Schönbrunn, the Imperial Coach Collection safeguards remnants of the Viennese court's extensive vehicle fleet, numbering over 600 vehicles. Visitors can view magnificent ceremonial coaches of the imperial family, including the "Imperial Carriage," likely built for Emperor Charles VI around 1735/40, and the imposing black hearse used for the funerals of Emperor Franz Joseph, Empress Elisabeth, and Empress Zita.
The exhibition also presents a variety of smaller, more modest gala carriages, children's carriages, sports, leisure, and travel vehicles, as well as intricately designed garments from the imperial court. The collection even includes the only surviving imperial automobile from 1914. A special "Sisi Path" draws parallels between Empress Elisabeth and Lady Diana, highlighting their public adoration, personal unhappiness, lives in the spotlight, and tragic deaths. Empress Elisabeth's life is vividly illustrated through her splendid garments, carriages, riding equipment, and previously unseen personal belongings, with videos offering insights into her life and the connections to Lady Di, the "People's Princess" of the 20th century. The "Imperial Speed" section examines the Habsburgs' high-speed vehicles, including a modern art car by race car driver Ferdinand Habsburg, contrasted with historical sports cars and carriages.
