Curatorial context

The Kaiserappartements, located within the historic Wiener Hofburg, served as the residence and workplace for Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth until the end of the monarchy in 1918. The apartments provide deep insights into the private and public lives of the imperial couple. The Audience Chamber, where Franz Joseph received numerous visitors, displays two famous portraits of the emperor. In his private study, he kept his favorite portrait of Empress Elisabeth, painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The tour also includes access to private salons, living rooms, and bedrooms, all adorned in the rococo style with intricate stucco work, elaborate Bohemian crystal chandeliers, and ceramic tiled stoves. Key highlights of the tour include the Empress's private exercise room, dressing room, and bathroom. The exercise room, where Elisabeth spent considerable time, began her day with her elaborate beauty rituals. Visitors can still see the original built-in exercise equipment, such as the wall bars, high bar, and rings integrated into the door frame. The richly decorated spaces, including the dining hall, offer a vivid impression of the imperial lifestyle and the historical significance of these rooms.
