Curatorial context

Vienna's LEO - Letztes Erfreuliches Operntheater, founded in 1993, is a cultural institution dedicated to presenting opera and musical performances in a staged, humorous, and stylish format. Located in a former bakery dating back to around 1900, the venue boasts a unique ambiance with original features and a capacity of only 50 seats, making it one of Vienna's smallest opera houses. The programming is diverse, encompassing operas such as 'Aida', 'La Bohème', and 'The Flying Dutchman', alongside historical Jewish cabaret, musicals, Viennese songs, and Italian canzoni. The LEO is renowned for its annual 'New Year's Concert of a different kind'. Performances are characterized by their joy in music and singing, with the audience permitted to enjoy a glass of wine and hum along. A single pianist often serves as both accompanist and charismatic host, guiding the audience through the narrative, sometimes in English, and occasionally shortening complex plotlines to focus on the musically essential elements. The dedicated singers may undertake multiple roles due to the intimate ensemble size. In a unique interactive element, the audience may occasionally be invited to participate as a choir, adding to the communal and enjoyable experience.
