Curatorial context
Schönbrunn Palace stands as one of Europe's most beautiful Baroque complexes and a UNESCO World Heritage site, serving as the former summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty. Originally acquired by the Habsburgs in 1569, the estate was developed into a palatial complex, with significant remodelling after 1696 and a major transformation under Maria Theresa from 1743 onwards. The palace boasts 1,441 rooms, with 45 open for public tours, showcasing exquisite Rococo interiors. Key historical rooms include the Mirror Room where Mozart performed, the Chinese Conference Room used by Maria Theresa and Prince Kaunitz, and the Blue Chinese Salon where Emperor Karl I renounced his participation in state affairs in 1918, marking the end of the monarchy.
The sprawling Schönbrunn Palace Park is accessible year-round and free of charge, featuring impressive fountains, statues, monuments, and a magnificent Gloriette. Within the park, visitors can also find attractions such as the Imperial Carriage Museum, the Orangery, the Maze, the Schönbrunn Zoo (the world's oldest), the Palm House, and the Desert House. The palace itself holds deep historical significance, having been the birthplace of Emperor Franz Joseph and the location where he spent the final years of his life.
