Curatorial context

The Hermes Villa, a "Palace of Dreams" gifted by Emperor Franz Joseph to Empress Elisabeth, stands as a significant example of late-romantic villa construction in Vienna's Lainz Game Reserve. Designed by Carl von Hasenauer between 1882 and 1886, the villa draws its name from a statue of Hermes in its garden. Influential artists of Historicism, including Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch, contributed to its design. Today, the villa houses an exhibition on its history and its imperial occupants. Visitors can view personal items belonging to Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, alongside original furniture that vividly reconstructs the imperial lifestyle of the era. A notable feature is the Empress's bedroom, which contains a large bed of state dating back to the time of Maria Theresa. The surrounding gardens, named after the Hermes statue, and the on-site "Hermes" restaurant, which offers Viennese cuisine and game dishes with neo-rustic accents, complement the historical experience.
