Exhibition summary

This exhibition showcases the work of Tokyo-based architecture firm Atelier Bow-Wow, exploring their concept of 'Suturing Together'. The exhibition delves into their approach to 'Pet Architecture', sustainable design, and community engagement through architectural projects.

Curatorial context

Atelier Bow-Wow, founded in Tokyo in 1992 by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima, with Yoichi Tamai joining in 2015, is exhibiting their work under the title 'Suturing Together'. Known for coining the term 'Pet Architecture' to describe small-scale buildings in urban interstices, the firm emphasizes creative solutions, pragmatism, and sustainability. Their approach involves reusing local resources and collaborating with communities, reflecting a deep understanding of the relationship between people and their built environment. The exhibition's title, 'Suturing', refers to their architectural philosophy of 'sewing' or 'patching' together existing networks rather than separating elements. This practice aims to create harmonious relationships and environments with nature, utilizing local materials and deeply considering the interconnectedness of architecture within its ecosystem. The exhibition includes an intervention in the Secession's entrance hall, featuring a reed-clad wall referencing traditional roofing techniques and sustainable materials, with a workshop planned to explore this practice further. The Graphic Cabinet presents a historical overview of thirty Atelier Bow-Wow projects through photographs, drawings, and sketches, highlighting key methodologies such as their collaboration on the Kiosk for the sale of locally grown vegetables in Kumamoto Prefecture and their disaster relief platform, ArchAid, established after the 2011 East Japan earthquake. The exhibition also touches upon their work in Kamanuma village, focusing on collective ownership and the restoration of traditional Satoyama landscapes, leading to the Satoyama School of Design (SSD) and the construction of tiny houses from found materials. Atelier Bow-Wow's practice challenges the growing alienation between humans, objects, and the natural world, fundamentally questioning how architecture and society can be reimagined in the context of ecological change.
