This exhibition, 'Das Experiment 2B,' presented by the group >a room of one’s own<, explored contemporary feminist discourses and practices in the art field. It continued the project from 'Das Experiment 2A' by examining gender identities, feminist concerns in daily life and work, and strategies for social intervention.
Following the initial project 'Das Experiment 2A' in April/May 2001, the platform '>a room of one’s own<' presented the results of its ongoing research in 'Das Experiment 2B.' This exhibition delved into questions of gender identities and societal influences on young female artists, musicians, and theorists, examining feminist concerns within everyday and professional spheres. It explored contemporary strategies for shaping societal processes from a feminist perspective, emphasizing the importance of continuous self-positioning and exchange among women as a catalyst for political action and awareness.
The presentation in the Graphic Cabinet offered insights into communicative processes, featuring condensed versions of conversations, interviews, and narratives. An audio installation allowed visitors to engage deeply with interview material. Specially produced skirts, available for purchase, were printed with questions and statements taken from the discussions. These skirts, with their simple rectangular cut, could be easily transformed into banners with political messages, highlighting feminism's societal significance and the portability of feminist demands. The skirt was used as a metaphor for 'gender bending,' emphasizing that feminist demands are practical and applicable in everyday contexts.
The associated website, www.aroomofonesown.at, served as a weblog and an open forum, containing a collection of detailed transcripts of conversations and interviews, alongside documentary photo, video, and audio recordings.
