Exhibition summary

This exhibition by Emanuel Danesch and David Rych features video works from ten cities across Europe and the Middle East, reflecting their diverse cultural, political, and social landscapes. The project is presented through a mobile video library housed in a taxi, which travels between these cities, with posters in the Secession announcing stops and viewing times.

Curatorial context

The project 'Das Experiment 3' by Emanuel Danesch and David Rych delves into the cultural, geographical, political, and social situations of ten cities: Cairo, Beirut, Istanbul, Sofia, Skopje, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Ljubljana, and Vienna. Their work involves creating a mobile video library, installed within a 'taxi', which will traverse this route in autumn 2001, with stops and presentations in each city. Simultaneously, posters displayed at the Secession will announce the various stages and screening schedules of the journey. For the duration of their exhibition, Danesch and Rych will relocate their project office to the Secession's Graphic Cabinet. From this space, they will conduct research for additional video material, organize the road trip from Cairo to Vienna, plan the presentations in the ten cities, and keep exhibition visitors informed about the progress of 'utopia travel.' The project is framed as a laboratory setting where the emphasis is on the process and emerging insights, merging art with various cultural science disciplines. It critically examines cultural identities along a South-North axis, moving from Africa through the Balkans to Vienna, and challenges established dichotomies of 'North' and 'South', 'Occident' and 'Orient'. By contrasting these with the utopia of a homogeneous society, global culture, and universal language, the artists aim to break down old structures through mobility and create new possibilities for dialogue, questioning the narrative construction of artistic video and its role between fiction and documentation.
