This two-part exhibition, 'x-lands / extended', explores identity construction amidst cultural, political, and social changes, presenting diverse perspectives on the constitution of 'identity' within various contexts. It features artists Florence Lazar and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
The exhibition 'x-lands / extended' aims to address questions of identity construction under the premises of cultural, political, and social changes. The artistic positions shown deal with different perspectives on the constitution of 'identity' within various geographical/cultural contexts, juxtaposing moments of external attribution with the view from within.
Florence Lazar's presentation includes three video works and selected portrait photographs, reflecting diverse viewpoints on political events and societal shifts in former Yugoslavia, stemming from her close family ties to Serbia. Her work, employing genres like portraiture and documentary film, addresses concrete socio-political realities within classical art formats. Her video works 'Les Paysans / Die Bauern' and 'Si je suis pas devenu fou, je dois etre anormal / Sollte ich nicht verrückt geworden sein, muss ich abnormal sein' (both 1999/2000) are based on video and sound material from Serbia in 1998/99, representing different social strata's perspectives on the country's political history. 'Confrontations / Konfrontationen' (1999), filmed in private Parisian spaces, depicts a generational debate within the Lazar family about the Kosovan war and Serbia's democratization process, highlighting how socio-cultural backgrounds (French-raised children of Serbian/Hungarian-Jewish migrants versus parents) shape views.
The second part of the exhibition features two video works by Thai artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. 'Thirdworld' (1998), with its ironic title, critiques Western perspectives on Thailand and other perceived exotic cultures. Presented with intentionally 'unprofessional' image quality, the film offers a realistic yet metaphorical description of the island of Panyi in southern Thailand, discussing real-life conditions on the island through its soundtrack. 'Like the relentless fury of the pounding waves' (1995) is an experimental documentary fragmenting individual life stories, linked by the narrative thread of a radio program broadcasting popular Thai radio soaps.
