The artist engages with historical memory, the construction of reality, and the power of images through discussions with eyewitnesses.

Curatorial context

Isa Rosenberger's artistic practice critically engages with socio-political transformations and their repercussions, with a particular focus on post-socialist Europe. Her work often investigates changes in urban spaces and public spheres, achieved through communicative exchanges with eyewitnesses who share their personal experiences of recent history. These individuals become protagonists, and at times, co-authors of her pieces. A core theme is the construction of reality and the influence of images. Rosenberger examines the interplay between internalized, 'mental' images and those conveyed through media, aiming to propose alternative narratives and interpretations of history and the present. She analyzes how ideologically charged monuments and architectures are perceived and how this perception evolves over time. By juxtaposing images representing diverse perspectives, she allows their ideological power to be reflected upon and questioned. At the Secession, Isa Rosenberger presents three works that delve into societal transformation processes in post-socialist Europe. The exhibition includes her new video work "Nový Most" (2008), the photo series "Warschauer Nike" (2007), and the video installation "Ein Denkmal für das Frauenzentrum (The Making of)" (2005-06). "Nový Most," named after a bridge built in Bratislava between 1967-72, symbolizes a shift in perspective from East to West. This work is a cinematic collage that interweaves documentary and staged scenes with archival material from the bridge's construction period, exploring the East-West dynamic through the subjective viewpoints of three women from different generations.
