Curatorial context

New York-based artist Jordan Strafer's exhibition 'LOOPHOLE' centers on a new short film that uses a 1990s US rape trial as a backdrop to explore an affair, positioning it as a potential fracture point within the justice system. Strafer's work is characterized by its exploration of the complex interplay of ethnic identity, gender, sexuality, class, and 'Americanism,' often creating a dense, playful choreography of contrasting emotions. Her pieces are simultaneously humorous and tragic, intimate and detached, familiar and strange, repulsive and attractive, demonstrating that realities are rarely dualistic. In 'LOOPHOLE,' Strafer moves away from self-performance, utilizing elaborate mask-making, set design, and props to imbue the scene with its own narrative weight. The film critically examines power abuse, greed, and corruption underlying the trial, drawing parallels to the erotic thriller genre while confronting ambivalent feelings of fear and desire. Strafer personalizes the narrative by incorporating details from her own life, inspired by her mother's involvement in the trial, framing the work as 'fan fiction.' The film seamlessly blends fictional and real narrative sources, using stylized elements like recreated costumes, prosthetics, and even seemingly incidental details captured by the camera to create a compelling, morally ambiguous viewing experience that prompts viewers to confront their own ethical dilemmas.
