Exhibition summary

Katrin Hornek's immersive installation 'testing grounds' investigates the persistent evidence of radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons testing since 1945. Developed collaboratively, the work uses local soil samples as a starting point to explore the lasting traces of nuclear activity in our bodies, plants, and Earth's archives.

Curatorial context

Katrin Hornek's 'testing grounds' is a new, immersive live installation developed in collaboration with artists and scientists, addressing the pervasive evidence of radioactive fallout from hundreds of above-ground nuclear tests conducted since 1945. Utilizing a local soil sample containing trace amounts of plutonium as a point of departure, the exhibition traces the enduring legacies of nuclear 'fallout' within our bodies, flora, and geological archives. The installation evokes decaying landscapes and features a choreographed score performed by dancers twice weekly. A scan of the 'Baker' crater from the Bikini Atoll's nuclear test site is displayed on the ceiling, while texts developed by Sabina Holzer and Katrin Hornek, presented on turtle-shaped handheld devices ('Messengers'), offer multifaceted narratives. These are complemented by specially composed soundscapes and the dancers' movements, creating a comprehensive sensory experience that embodies the unspeakable. A publication with essays and contributions from the involved artists accompanies the exhibition.
