Curatorial context
Mykola Ridnyi's exhibition at the Secession delves into the complexities of war, media, and personal history, particularly in the context of Ukraine. Ridnyi, a prominent figure in the Ukrainian art scene, presents new works that engage with the ongoing conflict and its representation. Two large banners on the Secession's facade display images related to the war in Ukraine, including a bombed residential building from 2014 and an aerial view of his childhood district in Kharkiv. These works, part of his "Blind Spot" series, use distorted or partial imagery to reflect on how media constructs our perception of reality and societal "media wars."
Inside, in the Graphic Cabinet, his new film "The District" offers a more personal exploration of the war's impact on his hometown of Kharkiv. The film combines on-site footage with abstract effects, montaged photos, and drawings to bridge past and present, external landscapes and internal memories. A voiceover narration recounts the artist's memories of places that no longer exist, further blurring the lines between fact and recollection. Ridnyi's practice extends beyond his individual work; he is also recognized for his role as a curator and co-founder of the SOSka art collective and gallery, contributing significantly to the development of politically engaged art and platforms for visual artists in Ukraine.
