Curatorial context

In the summer of 2007, the Secession presented a dynamic program in its outdoor space with projects by Azra Akšamija, Patrick Baumüller / Severin Hofmann, and Tatzu Nishi. These interventions aimed to engage various publics, including those not typically associated with contemporary art, by interacting directly with the symbolically charged architecture of the historic building and opening the Secession to the urban environment. The exhibition fostered spaces for communication, allowing individuals from different walks of life to enter into dialogue. The projects challenged the traditional hermetic isolation of art institutions, prioritizing process and production over static representation. This approach aimed to provoke new discourse within the established institutional framework. Azra Akšamija's project, 'Kunstmoschee,' is a multi-functional carpet landscape that reinterprets Islamic architectural forms and religious representation, dissolving territorial claims of sacred spaces and highlighting the mosque as a social site. Baumüller and Hofmann's 'Die Wursthaberer' (The Sausage Makers) questioned artistic livelihood and consumption habits by creating an alternative economic existence through exclusive sausage production, fostering socio-cultural interaction. Tatzu Nishi's 'Hier entsteht ein Hotel' ('A Hotel is Under Construction') engaged with the Secession as a historical monument by enclosing its iconic leaf dome, transforming it into an exclusive hotel room for the viewer's gaze, presented as a construction site from the exterior.
