Curatorial context
SLIME is a unique hybrid on-site and online project that delves into our hybrid realities. The exhibition, curated by Joshua Simon, encompasses specially commissioned and historical artworks, lectures, performances, film screenings, and workshops, including one on making actual slime. The name is inspired by the metastable, plasma-like substance that is prevalent in online tutorials and videos. SLIME critically engages with the social, cultural, political, and sensory operations of digital hybridity.
The exhibition investigates how society today, operating at the site of implementation rather than production, experiences shifts in meaning-making. This includes transformations from strikes to riots, from the working class to surplus populations, from solidarity to conspiracy, and from organization to inconsequential sovereignty. The digital hybrid amplifies finance's intrusion into social reproduction, with the belief in digitality as an immediate practice creating sensual and political boundaries embodied by phenomena ranging from ASMR to far-right politics. The Secession program explores this societal phenomenon and its precursors in art to form an image of the political, economic, and cultural realities attributed to the digital hybrid named SLIME.
Within the main hall of the Secession, artist Francesco Finizio presents his new installation _Tickle Drown Thing_ (2024), transforming the space into a pick-up point for online purchases that is, however, out of order. Opposite, Elisa Giardina Papa's _Leaking Subjects and Bounding Boxes: On Training AI_ (2022) is displayed alongside a book, featuring images the artist collected while working as a human trainer for various AI optical systems. In the rear ceiling grid of the main hall, Ulrich Formann presents his new installation _Echo-System_ (2024), a planetarium-like constellation mapping conspiracy networks the artist followed on Telegram. A magnified detail from Albrecht Dürer's print _The Triumphal Chariot of Maximilian I._ (1518–1522) is displayed, where the word "Ratio" (Latin for "reason") is encircled by a sinuously winding line. In online culture, Dürer's Ratio signifies the opposite: a post receiving numerous negative comments, indicating a discrepancy between high interest and low approval that the algorithm interprets as popularity.
Admission and ticket notes
Admission to the on-site program is free. Visitors are directed to the Secession website for general information and ticketing, and a specific online platform slime.secession.at is provided for the online components of the exhibition.
